Statement: My art practice is a meditative process of noticing, documenting, and recreating my daily views through playful media. By painting these everyday scenes, I am able to slow down to see the holiness within them and learn from the tenuousness of life. Visual imagery often includes the neighborhood I live in, the colorful changing seasons, and loved ones at rest or play. Making bright acrylic paintings, painted paper collages, and immersive installations allows me to regain a child-like wonder.
As an art educator, I am constantly challenged by children's ability to be enraptured by nature and unexpected events. My students could spend an hour watching a turtle or spend weeks monitoring a growing garden. By being attentive, I have found that the next step beyond wonderment is an experience of healing from nature. My work captures moments in time and highlights the renewal that nature can bring to its observers.
When others view my work, they often experience that same connection to their surroundings. In the end, we become more interconnected and more appreciative of what we often take for granted. I offer my art as a gateway into the beauty and value of the present moment.
Bio: I grew up on the green hills of Southeastern Pennsylvania. My earliest memories are of playing in the sun with my siblings - chasing each other through labyrinths of trees. We regularly attended the Brandywine River Museum, "home of the Wyeths" and I lived among realistic depictions of my county by an American great, Andrew Wyeth. In 2017, I received a Bachelor of Arts in both Studio Art and Art Education from Gordon College in Beverly Massachusetts. Since then, I have taught art in various settings and developed my personal art practice. Today, I make art and teach middle school art in Alexandria, Virginia.
